Taking Animation Further

Here are the resources for the ‘Taking Animation Further’ twilight on 4th February. The twilight aims to equip you with the skills and some ideas for making better animations with students.

Stop Motion Animation is the art of bringing life to 3D models made out of clay or plasticene. Moving models tiny bit by bit and filming each movement, you can create the illusion of movement. Animation is great fun – it teaches computer skills, literacy and can help to develop speaking and listening.

Here are some great examples of Stop Motion Animation made by pupils:

The Story of Zacchaeus – Year 3 and 4

In this example from Walkley Primary School, each small group of students took a chapter from the book by W. Heath Robinson and created their own interpretation through animation.

Tracey Scott and Marie Jolly from Royd Nursery and Infants ran an excellent workshop at the CLC on Friday 25th September as part of the Emerging Technologies Conference for schools in this partnership.

The workshop was all about Animation and Film making. Here are the films that they used in the workshop – examples of films made by pupils at the school.

Developing Media Literacy through Animation

Welcome to the training session which aims to help you make better animations and films through media literacy activities and storyboarding techniques.

By the end of this session you should:

  • Understand what media literacy is and why it’s important
  • Know how to use a selection of media literacy activities
  • Understand the basics of pre and post production and why these are important
  • Know how to use a selection of tools for pre and post production effectively

This session should also equip you to help students make better films and animations.

What is Media Literacy?

Media Literacy can be defined as the ability to access, understand and create communication in a variety of contexts. These contexts cover print,  moving image, audio, online across a variety of devices and broadcast channels.

In this session we will be focusing on cine or film literacy in particular – which is the understanding of the moving image and how this is related to literacy and the wider curriculum.

Media Literacy – What? Why? and How? Presentation

Why is it important?

‘Giving people the choice to communicate, create and participate fully in today’s fast-moving world… this will help create a society in which everyone is enfranchised’

Charter for Media Literacy

In the same way a book is a text, the same is true of a film. A moving image text can be ‘read’ in similar ways to a print text, so cineliteracy helps children develop ‘higher order’ skills of inference, textual exegesis and personal response.
