More Copyright Free Images

Following on from our previous post on copyright free images for educational use, here are some more web sites where teachers and students can gain access to images for use in the classroom.

Pictopus is part of the Ictopus site which is a useful resource for cross curriculum ICT for Primary Schools. Ictopus publishes ‘Sharing Good Practice’ which is a magazine for Primary School teaching Staff as well as lessons2go which provide ideas for lessons across the curriculum which embed the use of ICT. the current issue of ‘Sharing Good Practice’ has some useful ideas for using the Pictopus images in the classroom.

Pictopus has a gallery of images that fall under the Creative Commons license. This means that they are the intellectual property of the authors but can be used in education and shared. They ask that you attribute them with the phrase “picture from Pictopus.org.uk” and make no commercial gain.

English Heritage has ‘Heritage Explorer’ which allows Teachers and Students to search a database of images by theme. all images are cleared for educational use.

Kent Local Authority have some useful guidelines on images and copyright which are available here.

Copyright Free Images, Sounds and Video

(Creative Commons licensed photo from FlickrCC)

We are often asked for advice as to where teachers can access photos, sounds and videos that they can use copyright free and repurpose for educational purposes.  The Yorkshire & Humberside Grid for Learning has a link to the NEN (National Educational Network) where there is a gallery of resources which can be used. You have to register if you wish to upload material but items can be downloaded without registration.

The East of England Learning Grid www.EB2N.org has some great resources as well.

The BBC Learning Zone has free video clip material from the BBC which provides audio visual material for use in schools. Teachers can search by age phase and subject, topic or keyword to find short video clips that can be used in a variety of ways. The clips have national curriculum and age refernces to guide schools in placing them within their schemes of work.

Additionally, if you use the advanced search function in flickr or use flickrCC you can search for creative commons licensed photos which are also copyright free.
