Welcome to the Whiteboard Course. These sessions aim to help you to:
• To learn how to use the IWB for simple annotation and drag and drop activities
• To feel confident using the IWB in class
• To move from using the board as a projection screen to a tool for student-teacher interaction
Please use this area to share ideas and materials connected to the sessions and to let us know how it goes if you try something out in class. You can also recommend good web sites or seek advice from colleagues. Most of all we want you to join in and support each other.

Some points to consider..
Can you identify any resources that you currently use that lend themselves better to using the whiteboard? (i.e. cut and paste, matching exercises)
Are there any videos that you will be showing this year that could be put onto the whiteboard in clips? What would be the advantage of this?
Can you think of any activities that you currently use as a plenary that would be ideal for using with the whiteboard?
What aspects of English are best suited to sorting, sequencing and classifying information as a way of testing hypotheses / modelling? These aspects are ideal activities for pupils to come to the whiteboard and manipulate to understand or find something out for themselves. (i.e. dragging and dropping different paragraphs to find out which works best as a story opening or conclusion)
Interactive Whiteboard Challenge
Just came across this on the Edublogger blog. Organised by Jess McCulloch, this is a great opportunity for CPD with your whiteboard. The Whiteboard Challenge wiki says:
‘Are you new to using an interactive whiteboard (IWB)? Have you used one for ages but want some other ideas? Are you using an IWB regularly but know you could use it better? Then you are invited to join the Whiteboard Challenge!’
Over 14 weeks, each fortnight, an experienced interactive whiteboard user will set a new challenge for you to complete. Related discussion will be hosted on the website.
The first challenege is about creating your own audio and adding it to your flipchart gallery. In Activstdio you can use the built in ’sound recorder’.
Using your Interactive Whiteboard
A great place to get started with using your Promethean IWB is the site Promethean Learning. Here you can access interactive videos that take you step by step through the basics of using your board right up to the intermediate stages of using it with other applications and using tools such as the eraser and reveal.
I’ve taken the course and it’s the best resource I can find for getting to grips with your IWB. There is an ActivPrimary and ActivStudio course, both of which are free.
To begin, all you need to do is register and enrol on the Level 1 Foundation course and then you can access the resources anytime by logging in and selecting ‘my courses’.
The CLC also has some free resources we have created for activstudio3. They are in PDF form.
Interactive Whiteboard Tips on TeacherTube
This is a useful resource from Teachertube with tips and tricks on using Activstudio and Activote in the classroom. There’s some useful tips on how to change the background colour of a flipchart and how to insert images.
There are also some more advanced tips which are interesting such as how to use two activpens on a board to encourage collaborative learning and problem solving and creating a timeline.
