In the Summer term I supported Stocksbridge High students in making a promotional film for the prospective Y7 parents. Below is the result.
The Y9 students involved worked very hard and learnt much about the process of film making and the importance of pre production in getting your film right.
Here are some of the resources we used to plan the film. Feel free to download and use them in your teaching or film making.
We started by watching example of school promotional films – both good and bad! We talked about what introductory shots were used, was music or a voiceover or live sound included and what types of camera shots were used.
We watched some of the interviews in the films and discussed whether you could only hear the interviewer – whether the interview was on or off camera and what questions were asked and to whom.
We also talked about who the intended audience was and what the overall look and feel of the film should be.
As a group writing activity we wrote an example documentary proposal using an example as a model. We talked about e-safety and what shots we could and couldn’t use.
Following this we planned the script and completed a production schedule – working who needed to be where and when and what interviews needed to be arranged.
Then we looked at how to use the camera and how to film a good shot. We learnt to record shots in the log so we could find footage quickly and easily later.
The students came down to the CLC following this and learnt how to edit the footage together using macs and iMovie.
Overall I think they did an excellent job.
Local History Research
We were very lucky recently to have a two University of Sheffield Graduates working with us to research the local history of the local area. Sally Ellis focused on Wisewood and Myers Grove Schools as they will be merging in the next few years and there will be a new building on the Myers Grove site. James Kennedy is working on the Stocksbridge area local history.
Here’s some of what Sally had to say about her research and time at the CLC:
“the placement has allowed me to develop skills from my historical backgound to meet demands in a professional atmosphere, and the structures within the CLC gave me a real taste of history in a public context.”
